This was the beginning of Serbian culture shock for me. I must have sounded ridiculous going around saying it to everyone, not just the Slava host. This tiny but significant detail could have saved me from appearing ignorant. Alas, it was somehow left out of my Slava briefing, and seems to have set the tone for the following years of my Serbian interactions. The host greeted us with 3 swift kisses on our cheeks and triumphantly held up a bowl of a mushy looking substance and a wooden icon of a saint. My boyfriend crossed himself a very unusual act to protestant Christians in the US before swallowing the stuff with a spoon.
A Guide to Stereotypes about Serbs: Serbs are womanizers
Tall, dark and sexy. While the rest of the world is being infested with feminist cancer, Serbia—like the rest of Slavic countries—has simply been immune. Seems like feminism and Slavs are like oil and water: My single gripe with Slavic women is that most of them have pale skin.

She is currently crushing on a guy from Serbia. It is only one of many facets that contribute to me being me. In fact, my nationality affects my beliefs, world views, and values more than it does my everyday preferences, habits, or lifestyle. However, any nationality can be typified and I will attempt to do so here- if only to save you a few headaches down the road: He owns an espresso maker and uses it daily.
He is probably good-looking, semi-athletic, has good personal hygiene, and likes designer labels. Some people might wonder if he is gay, but he is not, Serbia tends to be very anti-gay , he is actually just a metro sexual European. He probably likes to watch soccer and basketball on TV, but likes to play tennis in real life. He crosses his legs like a woman.
He will communicate bluntly, to the point of being rude and offensive but try not to take it personally, this is just the Serbian way. With every meal, he must have bread, regardless of how many carbs are already present. He will eat a lot of rich foods, but maintain a fit body. He will probably be a liberal. He will be accustomed to strong liquor shots, and will like to toast before, during, and after, a meal.
The Ottoman conquest of Serbia during the 15th century is traditionally said to have had a negative impact of the visual arts. The church was not subdued to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate at Constantinople and the nobility was suppressed. As the nobility and church were the main sources of patronage for architects and artists, the early modern period is considered an artistically less productive period in the art of Serbia.

Dec 4, , 8: Years ago you would have been right but if you travel to Belgrade now, you can see that the country and its family values are moving in the right direction. The simple fact that a gay pride parade was held in Belgrade proves that the country is catching up with the times. This is true even in the smaller villages where computers are becoming an everyday item. The presence of the internet in these communities allows people to get a perspective of the outside world and of course this is going to have an effect on how a Serbian man views marriage and the world in general.
Take my cousin for example, he got married last year in Novi Sad , when I came to visit over the summer he was fully active, he would come home from work and get dinner started because his wife works longer hours, when she got home she would help out, they would both tidy up the house, and they behaved as you would expect any married couple to behave. That is the image of the modern Serbian man, which is to say that is the image of the generations after Tito, a group of young Serbians who were born right as a tidal wave hit the Balkans, of course there was war, but there was also an influx of Western values which would change Serbian society.
So I am sorry to say but I feel that your view of a Serbian man is out-dated.

How are Serbian men like

In , when Slovenia and Croatia seceded from Yugoslavia, Serbia went to war. Croatia, Slovenia and later Bosnia were pounded and besieged under his rule. Honour is an important principle in Croatian culture and is closely related with family values. Making personal sacrifices to benefit one’s family is highly regarded. One example is the large value placed on spending time with family members, with the common perception being that weekends are to be reserved for ‘family time’ and business.
Also related to this basic root are the Turkish and Greek words for Albanians and the Albanian language. The latter explanation may, however, simply be a folk etymology or constitute the reason why Albanians identify themselves with the eagle. Albanians can be divided into two cultural groups: The geographic border between the two groups, based on dialect, runs roughly along the Shkumbin River, which flows through the central town of Elbasan to the Adriatic Sea.
All Albanians south of the Shkumbin, including the Albanians of Greece, southwestern Macedonia, and southern Italy, speak Tosk dialects with their characteristic rhotacism. Although dialect and cultural differences between the Ghegs and Tosks can be substantial, both sides identify strongly with the common national and ethnic culture.
